How to use the Balanced Team Generator

When and why to use it
Use it when each participant has a simple 1–5 rating and teams should have similar total ratings.

Enter each participant as Name | rating, using a skill rating from 1 to 5. For example, Maya | 5 and Noah | 2.

Choose Number of teams. Review the ratings so the same scale is applied to everyone; a missing rating defaults to 3.

Select Generate and compare the groups. Check total ratings, team sizes, and any role requirements before using the assignment.
How randomness and fairness work
Players are processed from highest to lowest rating. Each player goes to the team with the lowest current rating total, using team size to break a tie. Names are shuffled inside the resulting teams. This greedy method aims for similar totals but does not guarantee equal sizes or the best possible allocation.
Limitations
A single rating cannot capture chemistry, roles, availability, or every meaning of balance.

How do skill ratings work?
Add a vertical bar and a rating after each name, such as Alex | 4. Ratings are limited to 1 through 5, and missing ratings default to 3.
Are the teams guaranteed to have equal sizes and skill?
No. The assignment aims to keep rating totals close and uses team size to break ties. Some rosters yield different team sizes or totals. Review the output for your activity.
Will Generate put everyone on a different team next time?
Not necessarily. With unchanged names and ratings, the allocation can stay the same while names shuffle within teams. Use the Random Team Generator for a fresh random allocation.
Can I keep players together or assign specific roles?
This tool does not enforce teammate, position, captain, or accessibility rules. Adjust the resulting teams manually when your activity has those requirements.
